HAPPY THANKSGIVING ...

... to all our American friends and a just good old Happy Day to everyone else throughout the world!

This is Lucky and our turkey in 2007.

This year we are having one of those organic, all-natural, happy-lived, free-range, grass-fed, pampered, local-grown turkeys - we call him Gandhi. I suspect you will read more about this experiment. Gandhi was expensive. Gandhi better be good.

What's on your menu?

Good luck with Gandhi...Sure hope he's good!!

As usual we have a whole bunch of different food for all the family, but instead of leaving a huge long list I'll just list the best stuff (in my opinion) which is:

The Turkey(We brine the turkey so its super delicious (Alton Brown's recipe is the best!))
Pumpkin Pie
Homemade Apple Pie
and Mashed Potatoes...
My Mom's mashed potatoes are a huge Thanksgiving staple for us.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too!

Start the day with homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast.

Turkey w/stuffing
my Aunt Judy's potatoes (to die for) w/gravy
green bean cassarole (yes, the ones with the french fried onions)
lefse (a nod to my Norwegian ancestors)
deviled eggs
pecan pie
pumpkin pie made from a real pumpkin by my daughter (still in the oven and uh oh, just discovered she forgot the evaporated milk...)

Yay for "small enough to manage well" farmers and ranchers! Gandhi lived a good life. And, yay for YOU for choosing responsible farming and ranching! Humane Farming is my "soap box" topic, but we won't go there. Just HAPPY THANKSGIVING! I don't think Lucky quite knew what to do next to that turkey! Hahaha!

Having Thanksgiving at my parents' home: smoked turkey and ham, green bean casserole (the sour cream and carmelized onion kind), mashed and sweet potatoes, tubouli, fruit salad, pumpkin pie and whipped cream, iced sugar cookies, molasses cookies, home made cranberry sauce, cornbread dressing, and vegetarian dressing for my daughter. Best thing is sitting in the dining room for hours afterward talking! Bunnies: lettuce and dried cranberries and lots of parsley and Timothy hay.

Lucky looks like he's hoping he's not next to be plucked and roasted!

Gandhi the turkey! Too funny!
I'm fixing David all his favorites and a turkey breast. Like Christina, he too is excited for pie! :) Since I'm a vegetarian, my din din will be roasted asparagus, acorn squash, sweet potatoes, rosemary string beans, a whole grain roll and wine. Yay wine! hee, hee, hee.

We had Gandhi last year, and he was tough and dry and expensive (seems free-range gandhi's don't have a lot of fat on them or meat either.) This year we have a butterball-type and mashed potatoes, brussels sprouts, salad, various kinds of cranberry stuff, pies, strawberry shortcake.

How could you not have a Happy Day with that adorable Lucky face to look at.

Hope Gandhi turned out well and that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We went to the relatives' house to eat. I was asked to bring the ubiquitous green bean casserole. No leftovers, so I'm cooking today (was supposed to cook yesterday, but we decided to go eat at an Asian restaurant).
