About those trees we planted at the Joe Leary Slough in November - I am putting down cardboard and then piling on several shovelsful of bunny litterbox waste as a mulch to keep the reed canary grass from choking them this summer. That grass grows 6 feet tall and has horrid roots.

A nice day today and BL cleaned the decks and put out fresh hay and litter. All of The Bunns got out on the deck after several days cooped up inside. There was a LOT of happy movement!

Benji has some fancy-pants too, but he is not cooperating well for the camera. He thinks he should have been first, not Winston. (Goldie is looking for a treat.)

STORY TIME, BUNNS ....

I’ve been learning to write better, bunns! Ms. Juliet Wilson (aka Crafty Green Poet), an accomplished writer, poet, blogger, earth muffin, and fan of yours, has had me as a student in a long-distance, on-line class about Environmental Writing. Your friends The Spots-and-Harriet’s slave, from QiPapers is also doing it. I want to try to use better writing to help people preserve and enjoy their happy and healthy environments.

I have learned how reading about nature and spending more time outside with natural things will give me materials and subjects for writing. I will pay better attention, keep notes, and take more pictures. There is non-fiction and fiction writing, and I have practiced both of them. I seem to do better with fiction writing, but I need to get better at non-fiction because that is what I want to do more of. We read some interesting examples and then wrote some of our own. I may share them someday; some seem quite good, thank you.

I also might share some of the poetry I wrote - or maybe not. While I learned a good deal about poetry, and read many fine examples of nature and environmental poetry, I still need much help and practice. I have two new books with many examples and I will continue to practice. I did write a few poems, but poetry is a lot more than just rhyme and I still don’t “get it” much.

Now we are studying blogs and investigating what our own blog might be like. I used our blog about you all as an example; we have had plenty of practice and some modest success. Perhaps I will branch out and build a blog more about Nature and the Environment too. That will be a broader audience and I will need to learn and use techniques for acquiring new followers and keeping their attention. I will be using it to educate, that is my mission.

We are also studying how to be published. This is a big subject and I have much thinking to do there, it is a daunting task and there are many ways to be published besides as a best-selling author. I need a “plan” and that is my current assignment so I better hop to and get to work on that! It’s a bit of a mystery to me right now.

APPLE PRUNING TIME !!!!

We are beginning to prune the three back-yard apple trees. Here are Benji and Goldie with the first of the new crop. When we gave sticks to all bunns the other wet, soggy, stay-inside day, all we heard for many minutes was "crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch ...!"

Also the other day, BL says "I think there is something wrong with the shop-vac." - I'll say! That hay and fur (and poopsies hiding) all comes from daily vacuuming of the three inside homes for Goldie and Benji, Zoey, and The Boyz, along with the floor of their room. That is about two months worth. Fortunately we can buy and store hay by the bale for a good price. It all goes to the compost pile along with used litter. (You ought to see the worms at work in that compost pile.)

Some of the many relatives (one of BL's daughters and kids - Daddy is off flight testing the Boeing 787) spent the Holiday. A pretty good game of CLUE too. The smiling dark-haired young man on the right (next to the vacant rattan-seat chair normally occupied by his erstwhile partner, moi) won the game! It is hard when you have 6 players - each player gets only 3 or 4 cards each. We were fortunate; we had a person, a place, and a weapon! This family has a complex scheme for keeping track of things, but it works and one of them can win before I even know a single clue sometimes!

My camera is a Canon Power Shot S2 IS, 5.0 megapixels, 12x optical zoom from 2006 that cost me about $350. It uses the SD memory card, mine is 128 megabytes. I went to get a bigger memory card - maybe 2 gigabytes. Costco doesn't sell them. Only the SDhc card (a pair of 8 gigabytes for $27.95) ... I'm way out of date they tell me.

Now you get the Canon PowerShot SX30 IS 14.0 megapixels, 35x optical zoom for the same price and it uses the 8 gigabyte SDhc memory card. The guy told me even then I would still be out of date in 6 months. I went to BestBuy and got a single $12.00 2 gigabyte SD card and to heck with it. Who wants to take a picture so big you could print one to cover your bedroom ceiling!

When I started a job actually being paid to be a computer programmer the boss told us that computer memory cost $1 per byte so be efficient because there wasn't much of it, which is why, among other things, we never coded the 19 in the date fields and thus caused the non-event called the Year 2000 fiasco!
